What Pervasive product?

For Pervasive.SQL 7 - 8.6 it is dynamic.

If memory serves me well (unlikely ;-)

) automatic file/handle management didn't come in until P.SQL2000i (v7.9). Before that you needed to use the Pervasive Control Center and the settings were under Configuration->Server->Access.
