    Install on SLES10/OES2 x64 not Enterprise-Friendly

Hi all, my company is heavily invested on the PSQL platform and we want to see this be a resounding commercial success for you.

PCC is very difficult to get running on SLES10/OES2 x64 because of the 32-bit Java requirement. I was unable to get it working at all on a fresh OES2 box with eDir, but on a clean SLES10 it still had OOB issues.

Install scripts should be more helpful to users who don't have, or have a wrong 32-bit Java on the machine - especially since many of us are coming off Netware. Maybe you can have the script back out if the needed Java is not found ? Or include a Java that helps PCC start ?

Also, I had to add an export for JAVA_HOME to the /etc/profile which is *very* inelegant but the only way so far I have been able to get PCC to run (it even errored in Java first go but now runs).

I'd like to see the scripts be a little more friendly with a view to working OOB on x64 machines. I know that Java isn't your problem, but out of all of us, you're the best folks to do environment vars to serve 10.10. Maybe even package a Java with the released product ?

    Thanks,
    Richard

    Richard,

Thanks for your input. We are working on improving the OOBE for the Linux installers. Meanwhile, here are some answers to the problems that you are experiencing. SLES10/OES2 x64 comes installed with JRE 1.4.2 and PCC requires 32bit JRE 1.6. If you install a 32bit JRE 1.6.0 or later, you should be able to run PCC. Once 32bit JRE 1.6.x is installed, we have no problems getting PCC to run on OES2 with eDir. You shouldn't have to set up anytime if you run PCC as the 'psql' user. The PSQL installer has set up all the privileges needed by the 'psql' user to run PSQL utilities and engine.
