Backup Agent starts them immediately stops

When I start the agent with either a script or directly from the command line the agent starts and lists the files that

it's enabled for then immediately shuts off listing the files that its not enabled for. When I check the status at that point I find that the agent is off. What do I need todo to fix this issue? I am using backup agent version 1.2.

Please provide information on the version of the psql and the os environment.  Is this the first time that you use the ba product or are you moving from a  previous BA? Is the BA hook module listed in the registry under the psql engine? I am assuming the gui is failing the same way.   When you installed, were any error messages generated?

    - What version of Backup Agent are you using?

    - What's in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Pervasive Software\MicroKernel Server Engine\Version 10\Settings\Hook Modules

    - What's in the BA Event Log?

Then if I check that status of the agent it tells me that the status is off. I don't know why its starting and then immediately shutting itself back down.

Part of the problem is that you have files with the same name and different extensions (the user file.).  When the delta files get created, we simply drop the extension and add ^^^ as an extension.   In this case user.^^^ already exists when we try to create the delta for the second user file with a different extension (returning a status 59---file already exists, user.^^^^).   Is there a way, that you can open only one user file to test this?  Open up the application, activate the backup agent, and then check the data directory to see if the deltas are active.   You would have to guarantee that the user file would reside in a different directory for each user, otherwise, BA will not work for you.

Another approach would be to exclude the file user.*  From the documentation:

To exclude files from being placed into Continuous Operations

    1. Navigate to one of the following:
      • <Pervasive PSQL install directory>\PBA\Data (On Windows)
      • <Pervasive PSQL install directory>/PBA/Data (On Linux)
    2. Open the efl.txt file.
    3. Enter the names of files or file types as semicolon-separated values, on the same or on separate lines.
    4. The following are the entries in a sample exclude file list:

demodata/tuition.mkd; (Excludes the tuition.mkd file in the demodata directory)

/usr/local/psql/data/demodata/*.ddf (Excludes all files with a DDF extension, in the demodata directory)

samples\f???.ddf; (Excludes all files with names starting with f, including four characters, and having a DDF extension, in the samples directory)

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Pervasive Software\PSQL\demodata\bill*.* (Excludes all files whose names start with bill, in the demodata directory)

    5. Save the changes to efl.txt file, and close it.
    6. Restart Backup Agent.
    7. When the Backup Agent is running, open one of the files that you included in the exclude list.
    8. Although the file is open, it is not placed into Continuous Operations, as it is listed in the exclude list.

    9. Check the log file.
    10. The following message indicates the exclusion:

Backup Agent has excluded these files:

      <file name>

Re: Backup Agent starts them immediately stops

I  will try and schedule a test at the end of the day. We actually have multiple databases in the same directory with users having access to mutiple databases across 5 seperate facilities. I will try and test this today then I will contact the

software vendor who wrote the databases and see if they have a solution that would allow the user files to reside in a different directory for each user. Thank You for your help I will try this and let you know afterwards what I find out.

Re: Backup Agent starts them immediately stops

I tried running the backup agent with just one person logged in and it did the same thing. Here is what appeared in the BA event log:

E  4088  8/20/2008 5:12:43 PM   Backup Agent is unable to complete the ON request for the file:
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\USER.LNE" (Status 59)
I  4088  8/20/2008 5:12:43 PM   Backup Agent is now ON for these files:
                                      "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\PERVASIVE SOFTWARE\PSQL\DEFAULTDB\FILE.DDF",
                                      "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\PERVASIVE SOFTWARE\PSQL\DBNAMES.CFG",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\USER.RIT",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMPMST.EX2",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMPMSTEXT",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMP.MST",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\MAGIC94\CTL\ADCTL.MCF"
I  4088  8/20/2008 5:12:44 PM   Backup Agent is now OFF for these files:
                                      "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\APPLICATION DATA\PERVASIVE SOFTWARE\PSQL\DBNAMES.CFG",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\USER.RIT",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMPMST.EX2",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\MAGIC94\CTL\ADCTL.MCF",
                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMPMSTEXT",

                                      "C:\AOD\MAGIC8\AODDATA\COMP.MST"

If now one is in the system the Backup Agent turns on without error ( I tried this just to see). Any ideas??

Even with one person, you still have two files with the same name and different extensions i.e. user.lne and user.rit.  Try excluding the user file in the efl.txt--see the documentation.

I tried it here with demodata.  I made a copy of billing.mkd and and renamed the copy billing.dat.  With these two files open, the BA acted exactly like you describe.  Then I excluded billing in the efl.txt with the filename billing.*   The problem did not occur.
