Just a suggestion -- instead of making the resellers and OEMs download each individual file separately, provide a single download location, like an FTP site.

I had to click through 6 download agreements just to get the various client components downloading.  Then, for each of the 10 engine downloads, I had to click through, wait fore the Email, then click on the Email, and wait for the download to complete.  At least once, I lost track of which ones I had downloaded (since I didn't want to delete the Email until after I downloaded it) and had to start the download a second time, because the filename you're selected isn't in the Email itself.

Having a single FTP site where we could just highlight the folder and click GO would be real helpful.

    I'll second that.

And at least two times (didn't really count or note which files) the download on the European mirror was offered to me as Download.aspx. I'm guessing this means the file doesn't exist but after having to go through so many clicking I didn't bother to check and went straight for the American mirror which responded correctly.

Many thanks to the guy or girl who invented tabbed browsing Wink

Hi Jim (and Bill and Gordon!),

Is v10.10 going to also be available as "PSQL v10 Service Pack 1" for existing users?

    Thanks,

By the way -- to the OEMs, Resellers, and Testers out there...

Although the install mentions that you can bypass the license key entry screen to get a trial engine installed, please note that the PSQLv10.10 Server Engine "Trial" license that it puts in there is still a 1-User, 1-Day Temporary key.

This means that you MUST put your trial key into the software, even though the text on the install screen suggests otherwise.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!  Super Angry

And an even BIGGER warning!  Pay EXTREMELY CAREFUL attention to the What'sNew Manual around Page 8 where it talks about the new "Permanent" Versus "User Count" license keys!

Although Pervasive has allowed stacking of general purpose license keys since 1997's release of Pervasive.SQL 7, this is now FORBIDDEN IN PSQLv10.10! If you try to apply two different PSQLv10 license keys to a v10.10 Server, then you will get a wonderful error message "A Permanent License Already Exists".

    This means that:

    1) Anybody who ever purchased a small license (say, 6 or 10U) and then wanted to add another few users by applying another 6U license will be unable to use PSQLv10.10 until they get a new license key from Pervasive.

    2) Anyone who ever needed an uneven user count (like 30, 40, 60, 70, 150, etc.) and thus purchased multiple licenses to stack them will be unable to use PSQLv10.10 until they get a new license key from Pervasive.

    3) Anyone who ever wanted to merge two production servers onto a newer, faster server by simply applying both license keys to the same server will be unable to use PSQLv10.10 until they get a new license key from Pervasive.

My understanding is that this great idea is supposed to thwart people violating the WGE license limit of 5 concurrent users, and I can understand this.  I even asked about the upcoming limitations during beta testing, and was told that would impact the WGE only.  However, somehow, it now impacts the server engines, too, and I'm not thinking that this plan was thought through all the way.

Unfortunately, Pervasive currently has no plan in place to replace the "permanent" licenses with "user count" licenses.  They also have no SKU's yet for users upgrading an old PSQLv9 60-User system (50+10) to PSQLv10.  (You can upgrade the 50, but you'd have to buy a new 10U User Count Increase.)

The burden will now be on the resellers, OEM's, and Distributors to deal with this mess.  You'll now have to stock both new engine licenses AND user count increases in various platforms and user counts.  (I know a lot of resellers like us have eliminated the UCI SKU's since they offered no added value anyway.)  You'll now have to deal with irate customers who upgrade to PSQLv10.10 over the weekend and try to apply their two keys (for, say, a 30U system) and find their system unusable by more than 20 users until they can get a new key from Pervasive.  You'll also get to deal with customer returns of licenses that need to be swapped.

I'm thinking on changing my recommendations about the PSQLv10.10 "downgrade", at least for the near future...

    Definitely a licensing problem.
    We have 50+20 user licenses.

When I install Pervasive v10.10 with 50 users and then want to add another 20, I get an error stating that permament licenses are already installed.

I tried the following and it works:

    1) Install v10.0
    2) Install ALL license packs
    3) Install Backup Agent 1.2 (if needed. When v10.10 is installed, BA 1.2 can not be installed)
    4) Upgrade to v 10.10
All licenses will remain accounted for.

    Best regards,

    Smiljan

I tried to duplicate your results, and while I was able to successfully install this time (I think the PVSW.LOG error came from having Backup Agent in the mix), I was NOT able to retain all three licenses that I had entered on my v10.00 server.

    1) I installed PSQLv10.

    2) I installed three license packs to get to 26 users (6+10+10).

    3) I upgraded to PSQLv10.10 (Successfully)

    4) When I looked in the Monitor, I had only 6 licenses (the FIRST license that was installed).  The other two 10U licenses were now missing (or at least ignored).  Please check your server to see if you have 50U or 70U licenses installed!

This is BAD.  This also means that performing a v10.10 upgrade, even though NO errors or warnings are reported, can eliminate one or more of your existing licenses with NO WARNING WHATSOEVER!  And you'll have no way to get around it until you contact Pervasive.

May the server gods have pity on whoever tries to install v10.10 onto a production environment like this on a weekend or during overnight hours, because you'll be running with a partial user license quantity until someone at Pervasive can fix it.  Not a big deal, perhaps, for a 70 user site if only the first 50 are important, but what if the first 60 are critical to the business functionality?  Especially bad for 30U sites who can lose 33% or even 66% of their user connection capability without even knowing it until it's too late.

I wish I knew who came up with this half-brained idea.....

Anybody ready for the real kicker?   Even if you have a Pervasive PSQL v10 "User Count Increase" license today (as opposed to a second permanent license), you can NOT install it!  I tried this with a PSQLv10 UCI license, and it ALSO installs as a "permanent" license, making it impossible to stack licenses of ANY kind at this time.

By the way, Pervasive has already removed the trial download for the 10.00 code from their web site.

    Hi!

You are correct – after I rebooted my PC with 50U+20U installed, I only had 50 users installed (I checked Monitor and License administrator).
Immediately after install and upgrade (without reboot or services restart) I had 70 – like I mentioned before.
I again wanted to add 20U (which I already added yesterday and have mysteriously vanished after reboot), but I get the same error “A Permanent License Already Exists«.

So what do you suggest we should do? We urgently need those licenses to work (like everybody else).

Re: PSQL v10.10 is now Generally Available - Download Now!

Here's your "official" answer to this question:

I think you are attempting to apply 10.0 UCI on top of 10.10 permanent license. That doesn’t work. We brought this issue up a couple of months ago. You’ll need a 10.10 UCI.

We have verified that 10.10 UCI can be applied on top of 10.10 permanent license.

So, after years with a policy that each license within a major version class are identical, allowing a user purchasing a v9 license to run v9.0, v9.1, v9.5, v9.52, etc., it now appears that Pervasive is going to have a different license for v10.00 and v10.01 than they have for v10.10.  What a glorious mess they've created!

I'd normally say that everyone should call and complain about this sad state of affairs, but given that calling Pervasive is the ONLY option to fixing this issue, you'll already have to do that.

Not only do I have 225 PSQLv10 customers to contact and inform of the change (and to avoid the PSQLv10.10 for right now), but I'm still not sure how I can sell my new PSQLv10 licenses, with customers possibly buying older v10.00 licenses and newer v10.10 licenses to mix & match.  I can just see that they will all complain to ME, their reseller, when things break.  Sigh...

It would be really nice to have a Pervasive representative comment on this issue. Anyone from Pervasive monitoring this group?

    All,

We are completing a document that explains in greater details how the new licensing model works and will be sending to our partners and resellers.  I understand that this effects a small percentage of customers (those that applied multiple permanent licenses on top of each other with version 10.0), the majority of customers should not have an issue. For those customers upgrading from prior version (pre-10) it will be a matter on purchasing the correct user count and possible UCI.

Again, reseller and OEM will be receving instructions and a follow-up very soon.

Please feel free to contact me directly if there are additional questions as I would prefer to hear your comments directly.

    More details soon.

Obviously that is still a problem as there is no upgrade pricing on UCIs. This makes upgrading a 20+20 more expensive than upgrading a single 50.

Still... It's not as ridiculous as upgrading a 6 user V8 to v9 on either Linux or NetWare, which is actually more expensive than purchasing a new full product license.
